Elita Gavele un Sergio Mattarella

On 23 April 2024, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the Italian Republic, Elita Gavele, submitted her letter of credence to the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

In a conversation following the accreditation ceremony, the Ambassador of Latvia and the President of Italy discussed the political and economic relations between the two countries. Promoting tourism in order to raise the profile of Latvia as a destination for Italian tourists was one of the main highlights of the dialogue. As they exchanged views on bilateral relations, the officials acknowledged the need to further strengthen cooperation between universities, especially youth and student mobility.

Latvia and Italy are like-minded countries and close partners in the EU and NATO. As the conversation continued on a friendly note, Ambassador Elita Gavele expressed special gratitude for Italy’s participation in the NATO enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup in Latvia and contribution to NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission.

The Latvian Ambassador and the Italian President exchanged views on current developments in Ukraine, and they were unanimous on the need for providing all kinds of support to Ukraine targeted by Russia’s military aggression.

In her present posting, Elita Gavele succeeds Ambassador Solvita Āboltiņa.
