Vija Celmins: To Fix the Image in Memory

All of us know very well that art is forever! Or at least, almost forever.
Art is very special, because it tells us about ourselves more visibly and directly than anything else. Art lives in and around us. Without art, we would be missing something and lacking fulfilment in our souls, leading our lives to be much less satisfactory. This is why we can easily find art everywhere around the world: from ancient caves to grand palaces. Art is in ordinary people’s homes, and even in places of isolation.
When the Latvian people were forced to leave our beautiful country, they found refuge in the United States, Canada, and other places where you can be yourself.
As a tribute to liberty, they immediately turned to art. Art helped save their memories, their love of their homeland, and their ability to stand strong—indescribably even—against the challenges they faced as their country was taken over by the Nazi and Soviet forces of evil.
I am truly happy that this fine exhibition of one our best artists—Vija Celmiņa—is now here in Toronto. It is a great event for all of us.
Thank you to everyone who made this project happen. With pride and pleasure, I will talk about this exhibition to everyone. It is a great moment not to be missed.
