On 10 December 2019, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Jordan, Nawaf Tell, who has arrived in Latvia for an accreditation visit.

During the meeting, the State Secretary and the Ambassador discussed bilateral relations between Latvia and Jordan and the state of affairs in the Middle East. The officials appreciated the friendly character of political relations while recognising the potential for business cooperation. Promoting people-to-people contacts, including in tourism, could be the starting point for successful cooperation.

Ambassador Tell informed the State Secretary about low-price airlines, ride-sharing companies and accommodation-booking platforms coming to Jordan, and this is making what the country has to offer to tourists more accessible and attractive. Five million tourists have visited Jordan since the beginning of the year.

Latvia and Jordan cooperate in international organisations on a regular basis, and two bilateral meetings by the Foreign Ministers took place in 2019. Jordan is one of the most stable Middle Eastern countries, and it is actively engaged in the region’s peace process and also building constructive cooperation with the United States of America and the European Union. Andris Pelšs pointed out that as countries that are not very large, both Latvia and Jordan place additional importance on the strengthening of a global order based on international law.

Ambassador Nawaf Tell has presented a copy of his letter of credence at the Foreign Ministry. The Ambassador then took part in an accreditation ceremony with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits.
