Latvian Foreign Minister concludes successful visit to Saudi Arabia

On 6–7 November 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, was on a visit in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and met with His Majesty the King of Saudi Arabia and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as signing, together with the Minister of Finance of Saudi Arabia, a convention for the avoidance of double taxation.

Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs and His Majesty Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, King of Saudi Arabia, discussed the security situation in the Middle East and ways to strengthen political and business relations between Latvia and Saudi Arabia.

During a meeting with Abdullah bin Salim Al-Mutani, the Deputy Speaker of the Consultative Assembly of the Saudi Arabia, or Shura Council, security issues for the Middle East were discussed and there was agreement on the importance of establishing Latvian-Saudi parliamentary friendship groups. 

Edgars Rinkēvičs and the Minister of Finance of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Jadaan signed the Convention between the Government of the Republic of Latvia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the Avoidance of Double Taxation with Respect to Taxes on Income and on Capital and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion, which is expected to facilitate further economic cooperation between the two countries and strengthen their trade contacts.

In a conversation with the recently appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, there was an exchange of views on prospects for strengthening political and economic relations between Latvia and Saudi Arabia, followed by a discussion on recent developments in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa region.

As part of his visit, the Foreign Minister also met with the Head of the European Union Delegation to Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia, Michele Cervone d’Urso, for a discussion on Saudi Arabia’s domestic and foreign policy.


Background information

Saudi Arabia is one of the largest foreign trade partners to Latvia in the Gulf States. Latvia’s main exports to Saudi Arabia are grain, timber products and peat.
