As the Foreign Service is celebrating its centenary this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will welcome visitors to its historical building at K. Valdemāra iela 3 on the Museum Night on 18 May from 19.00 to 23.00.
The building originally housed the bank of the Riga Mortgage Society and then, from 1919, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Chancery as well as the office premises and living quarters for the President of Latvia.
The interior of the building has been designed in the ornamental geometric style of the later Art Nouveau period. The interior of the lobby with its terrazzo floor, columns and pilasters with grey marble facing, the stained glass ceiling and brass lighting fixtures has high artistic value. The visitors will be able to see the representational premises on the first floor and several expositions.
In the course of the evening, the Latvian Diplomatic Choir will give a musical performance titled “Music and Diplomacy”.
To be offered for viewing on the Museum Night:
─ the Ministry lobby (the former bank’s customer area), the room dedicated to the former Latvian Ambassador and head of the diplomatic and consular service, Kārlis Zariņš, the room and exposition dedicated to Latvia’s first Foreign Minister Meierovics, the only surviving ambassador’s flag, the former bank’s main safe, etc.;
─ exhibitions “15 Years of Latvia’s NATO Membership” and “15 Years of Latvia in the EU”.
Visitors will be subject to a security check at the entrance to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Entry to the building will be permitted only on presentation of a valid passport or an ID card. Driving licences or any other type of document will not be accepted. Please do not bring larger items (bags, umbrellas, etc.), metallic objects, food or drinks. You also cannot bring animals into the building. Please note that the visitor flow will be regulated depending on the number of visitors; therefore, you may have to wait briefly in line at the entrance.
The European Night of Museums is an international museum event which is held every year simultaneously in many European countries. In addition to regular exhibitions, many museums also organize special events – creative workshops, concerts, theatrical performances. The theme of this year’s Museum Night is the title of a poem by Latvian writer Rūdolfs Blaumanis, Tālavas taurētājs (The Bugler of Tālava). The museums will honour all the heroes of the past from every region, and tell their stories. In keeping with the Museum Night theme, the Foreign Ministry has chosen the motto, “100 Years of the Foreign Service. Courage and Diplomacy”.
