On 7 May 2019, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, and the State Secretary for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Croatia, Andreja Metelko-Zgombić, discussed EU issues of current importance and the priorities of the upcoming Croatian presidency of the Council of the EU.
Andreja Metelko-Zgombić outlined the top priorities set for the Croatian presidency: the EU’s security, the promotion of growth and development, connectivity in transport and energy, and the EU enlargement policy.
The Croatian State Secretary for European Affairs underlined that at this point it was highly important for Croatia to achieve accession to the Schengen Area and the eurozone in the nearest possible future.
State Secretary Pelšs expressed support for Croatia and congratulated the country on active preparations for the presidency of the Council of the EU, and he wished good luck and success in performing the responsible task for the first time.
Croatia will assume its first presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2020.
The current Trio Presidency of the Council of the EU is composed of Romania, Finland, and Croatia.
