The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the decree by the President of Russia on enabling simplified Russian citizenship to Ukrainian citizens

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs fully endorses the statement by the European External Action Service which condemns the decree of the President of Russia on enabling the simplified granting of the Russian Federation citizenship to people who permanently reside in certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions which currently are not under the Ukrainian Government’s control.

In the Foreign Ministry’s opinion, this move by Russia violates the Minsk agreements and impedes the re-integration of the non-Government controlled areas into Ukraine, as well as destabilising the situation in Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on Russia to refrain from actions that undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs agrees with the opinion voiced in discussions at the United Nations Security Council that such actions by Russia constitute a provocative and clear violation of international law.
