As from 18 February 2019, Jānis Beķeris will hold the post of the Press Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Prior to his present appointment, Jānis Beķeris was Head of the NATO and European Security Policy Division and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Latvia in Turkey (2015–2018), where his responsibilities included the representation of Latvia’s interests in Iran and Iraq. Before that, the diplomat served at the Security Policy Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Jānis Beķeris joined the Foreign Service in 2011 after having worked with defence planning and policy matters at the Ministry of Defence. He has also worked as a translator and a teacher. Jānis Beķeris has been awarded the Medal of Honorary Recognition from the Ministry of Defence as well as other significant civil awards. The diplomats holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a master’s degree in history.
Besides his native Latvian, Jānis Beķeris is also fluent in English and Russian.
The previous Head of the Communications Directorate, Press Secretary Gints Jegermanis has been appointed Ambassador-at-Large at the Planning Group.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Secretary is in charge of external communication and stating the official position of the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs. He also ensures cooperation with the Latvian and international media. The Press Secretary’s team includes the MFA Communications Group.
